Hong Kong Inferno Cigarette May Have Sparked Deadly
Hong Kong :The devastating fire at the Wang Fuk Court residential complex in Tai Po, which has claimed over 120 lives, has taken a new turn as a viral video on social media suggests the tragedy may have been started by a discarded cigarette.
The inferno, one of Hong Kong’s deadliest in decades, ripped through at least seven of the complex’s high-rise towers, which were undergoing major renovation work.
Hong Kong :The Viral Video and Allegations
A short clip circulating widely on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and other local media channels purports to show workers engaged in maintenance on the building’s exterior just moments before the blaze erupted.
-
The Claim: The video allegedly shows a worker smoking on the bamboo scaffolding or construction netting surrounding the building. Social media users and some local reports have speculated that a dropped, lit cigarette butt could have ignited the highly flammable materials used for the renovation.
-
Context: Residents of the complex have reportedly voiced concerns in the past about construction workers smoking on-site and discarding cigarette butts near the building’s sealed windows, an area now covered with combustible materials.
Authorities Focus on Flammable Materials and Negligence
While the investigation is ongoing, authorities have not officially confirmed the viral video’s cigarette theory as the definitive cause of the fire. The focus of the initial police and fire investigations has centered on the rapid spread being fueled by unsafe construction materials.
-
Preliminary Findings: Officials stated that the blaze spread at an “unusual” and terrifying speed, primarily due to the presence of highly flammable materials used in the renovation works.
-
Bamboo Scaffolding & Netting: The traditional bamboo scaffolding and protective mesh netting covering the exterior of the towers are suspected to have acted as a conduit for the flames.
-
Polystyrene/Foam Panels: Highly flammable polystyrene boards and foam panels, reportedly used to seal windows and around lift openings during the maintenance, are believed to have accelerated the fire’s spread rapidly through the structures.
-
-
Arrests and Investigations: Police have arrested several individuals, including directors and consultants of the construction firm, on suspicion of manslaughter, alleging that the use of substandard and unsafe materials contributed to the massive death toll. A separate corruption probe is also reportedly underway regarding the procurement and execution of the renovation contract.
Resident Concerns Over Safety
The tragedy has sparked widespread anger and grief, with residents lamenting that the disaster was preventable. Key safety concerns cited by locals and media reports include:
-
Malfunctioning Alarms: Multiple reports indicate that fire alarms across the complex were either switched off or malfunctioning due to the ongoing renovation work, leaving residents with no early warning.
-
Evacuation Hindrances: The construction materials, particularly the dense bamboo scaffolding and debris, reportedly blocked entry points, hindering firefighters’ access and complicating evacuation efforts.
The official cause of the fire remains under rigorous investigation as authorities continue to search for victims and compile evidence in what has become one of the city’s worst civilian disasters.
