Cyclone Ditwah LIVE Updates: India Rushes Aid, Coastal States on High Alert

Cyclone Ditwah (named by Yemen) continues its path toward the east coast of India, having already caused significant devastation in Sri Lanka. The storm is currently positioned over the southwest Bay of Bengal, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts it will make its closest approach to the coast by the early morning of Sunday, November 30.

Cyclone Ditwah Tracker and Landfall Forecast

  • Current Position: As of Saturday morning, Cyclone Ditwah is approximately 220 km south-southeast of Karaikal, 330 km south-southeast of Puducherry, and 430 km south of Chennai.

  • Movement: The system is moving at a slow pace (around 7 kmph) in a north-northwesterly direction.

  • Landfall Expectation: Ditwah is very likely to reach the vicinity of the North Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-South Andhra Pradesh coasts by early November 30. The storm remains classified as a cyclonic storm with maximum sustained wind speeds around 65 kmph, gusting up to 90 kmph. A slight intensification is possible as it re-emerges over the Bay of Bengal.


Cyclone Ditwah Weather Warnings and Preparedness

The IMD has issued severe warnings for heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough sea conditions across the affected states.

North Tamil Nadu Red Alert for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, and Puducherry/Karaikal. Orange Alert for Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Ranipet. Extremely heavy rainfall (over 20 cm in 24 hrs), gale winds (70-80 kmph, gusting to 90 kmph), uprooting of trees, localized flooding, and damage to crops/thatched houses.
South Andhra Pradesh Orange Alert for Nellore, Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor, and Prakasam. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is likely, particularly on November 30. Heavy to very heavy rain is expected across the coastal and Rayalaseema districts.
Kerala/Other States Heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast. Three reservoirs in Kerala’s Idukki district are on Red Alert due to rising water levels. Potential for flash floods and waterlogging.
  • Sea Conditions: Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the Southwest Bay of Bengal, Gulf of Mannar, and along the Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts until December 1.

Transportation and Infrastructure Disruption

  • Air and Rail: Several flights to and from airports like Chennai, Jaffna, Puducherry, and Tiruchirappalli have been cancelled or delayed. Southern Railway has announced cancellations, partial cancellations, and short-termination of multiple train services.

  • State Preparedness: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has reviewed preparedness, deploying ministers and senior officials to vulnerable areas. NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF teams are deployed across vulnerable districts for rescue and evacuation efforts.

‘Op Sagar Bandhu’: India Rushes Aid to Sri Lanka

The storm has caused catastrophic devastation in Sri Lanka, claiming over 80 lives and affecting nearly 1.5 lakh people, with widespread flooding and landslides reported.

  • Relief Mission: India has launched ‘Operation Sagar Bandhu’ to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) to its closest maritime neighbour.

  • Aid Deployment: An IAF IL-76 aircraft has landed in Colombo, carrying another tranche of relief material and two NDRF teams (80 rescuers and 4 canines) with specialized equipment like inflatable boats and hydraulic cutting tools for search, rescue, and relief operations.

  • High-Level Support: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the affected families and reaffirmed India’s commitment to standing firmly with Sri Lanka in its hour of need.
