Uddhav Thackeray’s Statement in Kunal Kamra Controversy: “A Traitor is a Traitor”

Uddhav Thackeray’s Statement in Kunal Kamra Controversy: “A Traitor is a Traitor”

Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra’s recent controversial video has stirred up a storm in Maharashtra’s political landscape. In the latest development, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray has broken his silence on the matter, extending support to Kamra. Thackeray remarked, “I don’t think Kunal Kamra said anything wrong. There’s nothing lacking in his song. A traitor is a traitor.” This statement comes amid escalating tensions, as supporters of Deputy CM Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena faction have reacted aggressively, even vandalizing Kamra’s studio.

The Controversy’s Origin and BMC’s Action

The uproar began when Kunal Kamra posted a video on his social media account, featuring a parody of the Bollywood song “Dil To Pagal Hai,” aimed at Maharashtra Deputy CM Eknath Shinde. In the song, Kamra used terms like “gaddar” (traitor), which the Shinde faction deemed offensive. The performance was recorded at Habitat Studio in Mumbai’s Khar area. After the video went viral, Shinde faction workers vandalized both the studio and the nearby Unicorn Continental Hotel.

In a fresh update, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have reached Habitat Studio—the very location where Kamra performed his contentious show. Many see this BMC action as a response to pressure from the Shinde camp, though no official confirmation has been provided yet.

Ajit Pawar and Sanjay Raut Weigh In

Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar offered a measured response, stating, “No one should go beyond the law and constitutional boundaries. The Constitution grants everyone the right to speak, but we must speak within the limits of those rights.” On the other hand, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut openly backed Kamra, questioning, “Why should a case be filed against Kunal Kamra? If this happens, then cases should be filed against PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah every day. Will cases also be registered for speeches made against Eknath Shinde in the Legislative Council?”

Shinde Faction’s Fury and Legal Action

The viral video infuriated Shinde faction leaders and supporters. On Sunday night, Shiv Sainiks vandalized the studio and hotel in Khar. Following this, Shiv Sena MLA Murji Patel lodged a complaint against Kamra at the MIDC police station. Now, MLA and Minister Pratap Sarnaik has filed a second complaint in the same matter. Kamra faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for defamation and public nuisance, among others.

A Human Perspective: Humor, Freedom, and Outrage

Kunal Kamra, known for his satire and ability to make people laugh, finds himself at the center of yet another controversy. His parody song, while a source of entertainment for some, has been perceived as an attack on the Shinde faction’s image. Uddhav Thackeray’s statement has added a new layer to the dispute, potentially deepening the existing rift between the Shinde and Thackeray factions. Meanwhile, the public views this through the lens of free speech. The question remains: Should there be limits to humor, or is it a legitimate way to hold a mirror to society?

For now, with BMC’s intervention and the Shinde faction’s outrage, the Kunal Kamra controversy shows no signs of dying down. It remains to be seen how this saga unfolds, both legally and politically.
