International Men’s Day 2025: Global Observance Spotlights “Celebrating Men and Boys” Amidst Rising Focus on Mental Health

Nations across the globe are today marking International Men’s Day (IMD), an annual observance dedicated to recognizing the positive value men bring to the world, their families, and communities. While the day celebrates contributions, it also serves as a somber platform to address the “silent crisis” of men’s mental and physical health.

The theme for 2025, “Celebrating Men and Boys,” aims to shift the narrative from negative stereotypes to one of positive masculinity, while urgently highlighting the health challenges that disproportionately affect the male population.

Beyond Celebration: Addressing the “Silent Epidemic”

While the day offers an opportunity to thank fathers, brothers, and partners, organizers emphasize that IMD is fundamentally about raising awareness for critical issues often ignored due to societal stigma.

1. The Mental Health Crisis

A central pillar of this year’s observance is the “Zero Male Suicide” initiative, which has gained traction in the UK, Australia, and India. Health organizations are using the day to highlight alarming statistics:

  • Global data indicates that men account for nearly 3 out of every 4 suicides.

  • Stigmas surrounding “toughness” often prevent men from seeking psychological help during crises of unemployment, divorce, or depression.

“We need to normalize men asking for help. International Men’s Day is not about competing with women’s rights; it is about ensuring that men are healthy enough to be the positive partners and fathers society needs,”

2. Physical Well-being

November is already recognized as “Movember,” a month dedicated to raising awareness for prostate and testicular cancer. IMD acts as a peak point in this month-long campaign, encouraging men to undergo early screening. Medical professionals are urging men over 45 to ignore the embarrassment and prioritize annual check-ups.

The Six Pillars of International Men’s Day

The observance is guided by six core objectives, originally ratified by the IMD coordinators:

  1. Promote Positive Role Models: Highlighting everyday men—working-class citizens, fathers, and community leaders—rather than just movie stars or athletes.

  2. Celebrate Contributions: acknowledging men’s positive contributions to society, community, family, marriage, and the environment.

  3. Focus on Health: Prioritizing the social, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being of men and boys.

  4. Highlight Discrimination: Addressing areas where men face legal or social unfairness.

  5. Improve Gender Relations: Promoting gender equality.

  6. Create a Safer World: Ensuring a world where people can reach their full potential.

Shifting the Narrative on Masculinity

Social media platforms are today flooded with the hashtags #InternationalMensDay, #PositiveMasculinity, and #MensHealth, as users share stories of the men who have impacted their lives.

Sociologists note a significant cultural shift in 2025. The discourse is moving away from the polarizing term “toxic masculinity” toward a more constructive focus on “positive masculinity.” This involves teaching boys that vulnerability is a strength, not a weakness, and that emotional intelligence is as vital as physical resilience.

History of the Day International Men’s Day

Although calls for a “Men’s Day” date back to the 1960s, the current iteration was inaugurated in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh. He chose November 19 to honor his father’s birthday, envisioning a day that would heal gender relations and highlight male role models.

Since then, the movement has spread to over 80 countries, including India, the USA, the UK, Singapore, and Australia, becoming a key date in the gender diversity calendar.

How You Can Observe Today International Men’s Day

  • Check-in: Reach out to the men in your life—friends, fathers, colleagues—and ask them how they are truly doing.

  • Advocate: Share resources on men’s health and suicide prevention.

  • Celebrate: Acknowledge the positive contributions of male role models who lead with kindness and integrity.
