Pakistan Train Hijacking: Baloch Liberation Army Strikes, India Faces Baseless Allegations
On Tuesday, March 11, a shocking incident unfolded in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group, hijacked the Jaffar Express, a train carrying over 400 passengers from Quetta to Peshawar. The attack took place in Bolan district, where BLA fighters blew up the railway tracks, opened fire on the train, and took control of it. In a statement released on social media, the BLA claimed responsibility and issued a chilling warning: if the Pakistani military launches any operation, all hostages will be killed.

This brazen hijacking has exposed serious flaws in Pakistan’s security system. More than 24 hours later, only 155 hostages have been freed, leaving the government struggling to resolve the crisis. Pakistani forces are engaged in a tense standoff with the BLA, but their cautious approach—due to the presence of suicide bombers among the militants—has slowed progress.

Pakistan Points Fingers at India and Afghanistan
Amid its failure to contain the situation, Pakistan has resorted to blaming India and Afghanistan. Rana Sanaullah, an advisor to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, made serious yet unsubstantiated allegations against India during a TV interview. Without evidence, he claimed, “There’s no doubt India is behind this. The Baloch rebels are getting support from India, and they have a safe haven in Afghanistan. That’s where they plan these attacks.” He further accused India of backing both the BLA and the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), alleging that their operations have intensified since the Taliban took power in Afghanistan.

Sanaullah also warned Afghanistan, saying that if the attacks don’t stop, Pakistan might cross the border to target these “safe havens.” However, no proof was offered to back up these claims, raising questions about their credibility.

What Does the BLA Want?
The BLA has given Pakistan a 48-hour ultimatum—half of which has already passed—along with a list of demands. They want all Pakistani military and security agencies out of Balochistan. The group alleges that Pakistan, in collaboration with China, is exploiting the region’s mineral resources through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, which they demand be shut down. They’ve also called for the immediate release of Baloch leaders imprisoned in Pakistani jails.

Who Is the Baloch Liberation Army?
The Baloch Liberation Army is a separatist outfit fighting for an independent Balochistan, separate from Pakistan. Formed around 2000, the BLA has a history of targeting Pakistani forces and Chinese projects in the region. From attacking Chinese engineers to ambushing Pakistani officials, the group has been a persistent thorn in Islamabad’s side. The United States, United Kingdom, and several Western nations have designated it a terrorist organization and imposed sanctions.

Pakistan’s Mounting Challenge
The Jaffar Express hijacking has laid bare Pakistan’s security shortcomings. While clashes between the military and BLA fighters continue, the situation remains volatile. The government faces the dual task of rescuing the remaining hostages and responding to the BLA’s demands. Meanwhile, its baseless accusations against India have only fueled tensions between the two neighbors, adding another layer of complexity to an already dire crisis.
