Kamal Haasan breaks silence on his two marriages: “Maybe I am following Dasaratha’s path, not Lord Rama’s”
During the promotional event of the song Jingucha from Mani Ratnam’s upcoming film Thug Life, veteran actor Kamal Haasan opened up about his personal life when asked about marriage. Along with co-stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan (Simbu), Kamal Haasan has been actively promoting the much-anticipated film. When the topic of marriage came up during the event, the actor candidly discussed his two marriages, and gave a funny and reflective answer.
Kamal Haasan’s views on his two marriages
At the promotional event of Thug Life in Chennai, the anchor asked the cast a question about their views on marriage. Trisha Krishnan responded in a light-hearted manner, saying, “I don’t believe much in marriage. If it happens, great; if it doesn’t, it’s okay too.” When the same question was asked to Kamal Haasan, he recalled a conversation he had with his friend and MP John Brittas 10-15 years ago. Brittas had jokingly asked, “You are from a good Brahmin family, so how did you get married twice?” Kamal Haasan replied with his characteristic wit, saying, “What does being from a good family have to do with marriage? He asked me, ‘You believe in Lord Rama, so why don’t you live like him?’ I told him, first of all, I don’t worship any god. And maybe I don’t follow the path of Rama but the path of his father Dasharatha, who had three wives.” His funny reference to Lord Rama’s father Dasharatha in the Ramayana made people laugh and showed his ability to address personal questions with humour and introspection. A look at Kamal Haasan’s past relationships Kamal Haasan’s personal life has often been in the news. In 1978, he married dancer Vani Ganapathy, with whom he had worked in the 1975 film Melnaattu Marumgal. The marriage lasted for a decade and the couple separated in 1988.
After the divorce, Kamal began dating actress Sarika. Their first daughter Shruti Haasan was born in 1986 and the couple got married in 1988. Their second daughter Akshara Haasan was born in 1991. However, their relationship faced challenges, which led to a divorce petition being filed in 2002 and the divorce was finalised in 2004.
After his second marriage, Kamal Haasan was in a live-in relationship with actress Gautami Tadimalla from 2005 to 2016. The couple worked together in several films, but they eventually separated. In past interviews, Kamal has openly stated that he does not think he is suitable for marriage, reflecting candidly on his experiences.
Kamal Haasan’s Upcoming Projects
On the professional front, Kamal Haasan continues to charm audiences with his versatile acting. He was last seen in Shankar’s Indian 2, in which he reprised his iconic role as Senapathy. Fans can eagerly await the next installment, Indian 3, which is currently in development. Meanwhile, Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, marks a significant reunion between the actor and director 36 years after the 1987 classic Nayakan. The film, which has a stellar cast including Simbu, Trisha and others, is scheduled to hit theatres on June 5, 2025.
