IndiGo Operations Collapse: Delhi Domestic Flights Grounded Amid Crew Crisis and Record Cancellations

New Delhi, India – IndiGo, India’s largest carrier, plunged the domestic air travel sector into unprecedented chaos on Thursday, with reports indicating over 550 flights were cancelled nationwide in a single day. The severe operational breakdown culminated in the cancellation of all domestic IndiGo departures from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) until midnight, as the airline struggled with a severe shortage of flight crew.

The mass cancellations affected hundreds of thousands of passengers across the country, with major hubs like Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad also reporting dozens of grounded flights, leading to scenes of widespread confusion, outrage, and long delays at terminals.

IndiGo: The Root Cause Pilot Shortage and New Safety Rules

The primary factor driving the crisis is an admitted miscalculation and planning gap in implementing the second phase of the revised Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) norms mandated by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

  • Revised FDTL Norms: Implemented to enhance flight safety and combat pilot fatigue, the new rules significantly increased mandatory weekly rest periods for pilots and imposed tighter restrictions on night-time flying duties.

  • IndiGo’s Miscalculation: The airline, known for its high aircraft and crew utilisation, admitted to the DGCA that it grossly underestimated the actual crew requirement needed to maintain its current aggressive flight schedule under the new, stricter rules.

  • Compounding Factors: IndiGo also cited other issues, including minor technology glitches, routine winter schedule changes, and increased air traffic congestion, all of which compounded the crew shortage, causing a massive cascading effect across its network.

Chaos in Delhi and Nationwide Impact

Delhi, a major hub for IndiGo, bore the brunt of the crisis:

  • Delhi IGIA: The decision to cancel all domestic departures until midnight led to one of the most severe operational disruptions in the airport’s recent history. The DGCA noted that the terminal saw the “highest passenger impact” and found IndiGo’s ground staff to be “inadequate” to manage the ensuing crowds and handle passenger requests for refunds or re-accommodation.

  • National Scale: On Thursday, cancellations were widespread, with major figures including:

    • Mumbai: Over 85 flights cancelled.

    • Bengaluru: Over 70 flights cancelled.

    • Hyderabad: Nearly 70 flights cancelled.

The sudden and massive capacity cut by IndiGo, which holds over 60% of India’s domestic market share, also caused airfares on other carriers to soar on high-demand routes, further aggravating the situation for stranded travellers.

Regulatory Intervention and Mitigation Plan

Alarmed by the scale of the disruption, the DGCA and the Ministry of Civil Aviation stepped in:

  • DGCA Summon: The aviation regulator summoned IndiGo’s top management to explain the “unprecedented disruptions” and demand an urgent, concrete mitigation plan.

  • Airline’s Commitment: IndiGo has informed the DGCA that cancellations will continue for the next two to three days as it makes “calibrated adjustments” to its schedule. The airline has promised to fully restore stable operations by February 10, 2026.

  • Request for Exemption: To stabilise operations in the short term, IndiGo has requested a temporary operational exemption from specific FDTL night-flying provisions until February 2026, which the DGCA is currently evaluating.

IndiGo has issued a public apology, acknowledging the inconvenience caused to its customers and assuring that teams are working diligently to normalise services. The airline’s on-time performance (OTP), a point of pride, plummeted to a record low of under 20% on one of the affected days, signalling a significant setback to its operational reputation.
