Gaza’s Brave Journalist Fatima Hassouna Killed in Israeli Airstrike Before Cannes Premiere

Fatima Hassouna: The brave journalist from Gaza who paid the price for the truth

Fatima Hassouna, a 25-year-old courageous photojournalist from Gaza, is no longer with us. She and her entire family were killed in an Israeli airstrike. The tragedy occurred just as a documentary based on her life was announced to be shown at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival in France. Through her camera, Fatima fearlessly brought the harsh realities of war-torn Gaza to the world, capturing the struggles of ordinary people — children, women, and the elderly. Her powerful photographs and unwavering courage remain an inspiration and alive in the hearts of many to this day. Let’s dig deeper into this heartbreaking story and Fatima’s remarkable legacy.

Fatima Hassouna: The Voice of Gaza

Fatima Hassouna was more than a journalist; she was a beacon of truth for the people of Gaza. Her lens exposed the brutal realities of war — bombing, destruction, and human suffering. Her photographs, featured in major global media outlets, captured the resilience and pain of Gaza’s residents. Despite her life being in constant danger, Fatima never backed down. In a poignant social media post, she once wrote, “I don’t want my death to be just a number. I want people to remember my story.” Tragically, those words have now become a horrifying reality, and her death has shaken the world.

A Dream Shattered at Cannes
Fatima’s inspiring life story was so profound that Iranian filmmaker Sepide Farsi made a documentary about her, titled “Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk.” The film was scheduled to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2025. Sepide worked closely with Fatima for a year and a half, dreaming of bringing her to France to share her story with the world. However, just a day after the film’s selection was announced, a bomb fell on Fatima’s home, shattering this dream forever. “When I heard about Fatima’s death, I couldn’t believe it. Her smiling face flashes before my eyes,” a grieving Sepideh said.

Airstrike wipes out a family

Israeli airstrikes have intensified in Gaza, killing countless people. So far, more than 51,000 people have been killed, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry. On the day of the attack, at least 25 other people were killed in Gaza. Fatima’s pregnant sister, brother, parents and other relatives were either killed or injured in the attack. Her cousin said two rockets suddenly fell on their house, destroying everything. The Israeli military claims it targets Hamas operatives, but those who knew Fatima say her family had no connection to any organization — they were ordinary people longing to live a peaceful life.

Her last post and the price of journalism
Fatima’s last social media post touched the hearts of people around the world. Sharing photos of fishermen on the Gaza coast, she wrote a poetic caption: “You enter this city, but you don’t want to leave it, because it becomes a part of you.” These words have become very important now. According to the Palestinian Journalists Protection Committee (PJPC), at least 212 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023. The organization has demanded an international investigation into these deaths. Fatima’s story is a reminder of the heavy price journalists pay for exposing the truth in war zones. Although she is no longer with us, her photos, courage and legacy will resonate forever.
