Mahesh Babu’s ‘Varanasi’ Teaser Event
The highly anticipated collaboration between filmmaker S. S. Rajamouli and superstar Mahesh Babu, previously known by the working title SSMB29 or GlobeTrotter, finally received its official identity at a spectacular fan event. The film was officially titled ‘Varanasi’ at the mega-launch event, which took place not in Varanasi, but at the iconic Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad on Saturday, November 15, 2025.
An Event of Unprecedented Scale
The “GlobeTrotter” event was a cinematic spectacle designed to match the film’s rumoured colossal scale. Over 50,000 ecstatic fans gathered, creating one of the largest live film promotion gatherings in Indian cinema history. Entry was highly restricted, with attendees requiring special ‘passport-style’ passes to enter the venue, playing on the film’s original globe-trotting theme.
The event featured a colossal stage and screen setup—a 130 ft x 100 ft screen—reportedly the largest ever used for a film reveal in India. The stage itself was designed to resemble the ghats of the holy city of Varanasi, complete with flowing water, setting a strong spiritual and mythological tone for the evening.
The Grand Unveil: Title and Mahesh Babu’s Look
The grand highlight of the night was the unveiling of the title, ‘Varanasi’, and the first look of Mahesh Babu’s character, Rudhra. The star made a dramatic entrance on stage atop an electric bull, setting the crowd into a frenzy.
The title teaser introduced Mahesh Babu in an intensely primal and mythic avatar. He was seen wielding a trishul (trident) while riding a powerful bull, with a blood-soaked shirt and a Nandi pendant, all against the backdrop of ancient temples. Director Rajamouli shared the poster on social media, simply stating, “Mahesh Babu as RUDHRA in #VARANASI.” The look was immediately hailed by fans as one of the best of the actor’s career.
Teaser Reveals a Time-Travel Epic
The three-minute teaser provided the first concrete details on the film’s ambitious plot, hinting at a sprawling, time-and-globe-trotting adventure. The visuals cut rapidly across different eras and geographies, suggesting a deep mythological and historical connection:

Antarctica, 2027 CE: Scenes of explorers searching for an ancient, lost civilization buried beneath the ice cap were shown, suggesting a sci-fi element.

Mythological Epochs: Other glimpses reportedly included an asteroid named “Shambhavi 2027 CE” and a striking, brief sequence featuring Mahesh Babu in the breathtaking avatar of Lord Ram, an unfulfilled wish of his late father, actor Krishna, that Rajamouli proudly spoke about fulfilling.
Rajamouli confirmed that the film is being shot using Premium Large Scale Format Filmed for IMAX technology, emphasising the global scale they are aiming for.
Star-Studded Presence and Technical Hiccups
The event also saw the presence of co-stars Priyanka Chopra Jonas (who plays Mandakini) and Prithviraj Sukumaran (the antagonist Kumbha), whose character looks had been previously released. Priyanka Chopra instantly won the crowd by addressing them in fluent Telugu, calling Mahesh Babu “legendary.”
Despite the impeccable planning, the evening faced significant technical glitches. Rajamouli personally addressed the gathered fans, apologising for the delay in the teaser screening. He revealed that the crew could not test the video on the massive screen due to concerns about drones attempting to leak the footage, representing a year of hard work. He praised the fans’ discipline and patience, stating, “You’re as disciplined as your idol.”
Release Timeline
Music Director M. M. Keeravaani confirmed the film is set for a worldwide theatrical release in Summer 2027, positioning it as one of the most-awaited global action-adventure epics in Indian cinema history.
The ‘Varanasi’ teaser launch was not just an announcement; it was a powerful statement of intent, showcasing Rajamouli’s ambition to elevate Indian filmmaking onto the global stage once again with Mahesh Babu leading the charge.
