Nagpur Violence: Fahim Shameem Khan Named Mastermind, FIR Against Bajrang Dal, 50 Arrested

A wave of violence that erupted in Nagpur, Maharashtra, on March 17 has sent shockwaves across the city. Fahim Shameem Khan, the city president of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP), has been identified as the alleged mastermind behind the unrest. According to police reports, a mob of 500 to 600 armed individuals attacked law enforcement, hurled petrol bombs, and molested female police officers. So far, four FIRs have been registered, and 50 people have been arrested in connection with the incident. Here’s a detailed look at the entire episode.

How the Violence Began: A Clash Over Shivaji Jayanti

The unrest began during a protest organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal on the occasion of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s birth anniversary. The groups gathered near Gandhi Gate in Nagpur, where they burned an effigy symbolizing Aurangzeb’s tomb and raised slogans against him. Despite police attempts to intervene, the protesters defied prohibitory orders and carried out the act, escalating tensions.

In response, Fahim Shameem Khan, leading a group of 50-60 MDP supporters, assembled outside a police station to lodge a complaint against those protesting Aurangzeb. Based on their complaint, a case was filed against nine individuals involved in the effigy-burning. However, this was just the beginning. What followed was a spiral of violence that started at 4 PM and continued until 11:30 PM.

The Nature of the Violence: Attack on Police and Misbehavior with Women Officers

According to the FIR filed by the police, a mob of 400-500 people, allegedly led by Fahim Khan, gathered near Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s statue with the intent to incite a riot. Armed with axes, sticks, stones, and petrol bombs, the crowd not only attacked police personnel but also spread panic in the area.

The most alarming accusations involve the mistreatment of female police officers. The police report states that some rioters took advantage of the darkness to pull at the uniforms of women constables, make obscene gestures, and hurl abusive remarks. The mob reportedly shouted threats like, “We won’t spare the police or any Hindus; they’re the ones behind all this.” Authorities have labeled the incident a planned attack aimed at stoking religious tensions and disrupting social harmony.

Who is Fahim Shameem Khan?

Fahim Shameem Khan is the president of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP) in Nagpur. He contested the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Nagpur against Union Minister Nitin Gadkari but lost, with his deposit forfeited. The police have named him and 51 others in the case, accusing him of being the mastermind behind the violence. Authorities allege that Fahim incited his supporters and played a key role in turning the crowd against the police.

Action Against Bajrang Dal and VHP

On the other side, an FIR has also been filed against members of Bajrang Dal and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The police claim that by burning Aurangzeb’s effigy, these groups violated prohibitory orders, contributing to the escalating tensions. A case has been registered under Section 168 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita 2023.

Police and Administrative Response

Nagpur Police have arrested 50 individuals so far. Of these, 19 were presented before the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court on Wednesday and remanded in police custody until March 21. The police had sought their remand for further investigation. Additionally, the Maharashtra Cyber Department has removed over 800 social media posts linked to the violence. An investigation revealed that more than 70 URLs were used to spread inflammatory content, and strict action is being planned against those responsible.

The Police Commissioner stated that the mob was repeatedly warned to maintain peace, but they proceeded with the violence. Efforts are now underway to identify the remaining accused and take firm action against them.

Government’s Stance

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has adopted a tough stance on the matter, asserting that the culprits will not be spared at any cost. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) leader Uddhav Thackeray has raised sharp questions, demanding the government uncover the truth behind the violence.
