Medical Assistance at Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025: A Critical Overview

The Tata Mumbai Marathon 2025, with a massive turnout of 62,000 participants, saw a notable 2,018 runners requiring medical assistance during the event. Of these, 26 needed hospitalization, though no fatalities were reported, marking a significant improvement from 2024, which had recorded two deaths.

Dr. Santosh Kumar Dora, the consultant cardiologist at Asian Heart Institute and the medical director for the marathon, explained that most medical cases involved minor issues like muscle cramps, leg pain, dehydration, and minor bruises. To manage these situations effectively, his team set up 15 aid stations, three base camps, and mobilized 600 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists, across the course.

Of the hospitalized participants, 15 were admitted to Bombay Hospital, the closest medical facility to the race. Dr. Gautam Bhansali, a consultant physician at Bombay Hospital, shared that 15 patients were placed in the ICU, with 13 in stable condition. Two participants, Kathiravan (39) and Hardik Shah (age unknown), were on ventilators after suffering cardiac arrests during the race. Vijay Anand (52), who had a heart attack and underwent angioplasty, was also reported to be stable.

Dr. Bhansali added that the majority of patients admitted to the hospital were severely dehydrated, with several runners being transported by fellow participants. In addition to Bombay Hospital, three participants were rushed to Jaslok Hospital, five to Lilavati Hospital, and others to Saifee and Podar Hospitals for treatment, most of them in the outpatient departments.

Dr. Dora further stated that many of the hospitalized cases involved cardiac arrests, blackouts, dehydration, fractures, and loss of consciousness, emphasizing the importance of adequate hydration and immediate medical care during such large-scale events.
